Overview

There is a growing body of literature on the need to improve well-being of healthcare professionals over the past five years. In the U.S., healthcare professionals suffer more burnout than other workers, with prevalence rates as high as 50% in physicians. Extensive research over the past decade illustrates that this issue could have a profound effect on the quality of patient care and there is concern that it might lead to early departure from the practice of medicine. This unique course will examine the importance of wellness and provide recommendations, tools, and resources that healthcare professionals could utilize to develop resiliency, work/life balance, and self-care. By using a skills lab approach, attendees are expected to learn and practice stress management methods, and emotional intelligence techniques with the opportunity to meet in small groups with fellow healthcare professionals to acquire and practice wellness skills.

The Opening Keynote Lecture is presented by the Arnold L. Gilberg, MD, PhD, Lectureship in Psychiatry & Behavioral Health.

The Closing Keynote Lecture is presented by the Ellen and Sidney R. Cooperman Endowed Lectureship Fund.

Objectives
  1. Describe the methods of promotion of wellness
  2. Acquire and practice stress management skills

Modern day women attempt to balance maintaining and promoting career and professional contributions, caring for their own nuclear families, and caring for ageing parents. Women physicians contend with higher rates of burnout than male physicians and women non-physicians.  Challenges include continued gender pay gap, leadership disparity, contending with antiquated misperceptions and handling unwanted comments and advances. This small group  will explore challenges and experiences of participants and discuss ways to maintain balance and wellness for women MD’s in a collaborative interactive session

Redesign Takes A Village  - Understanding Behavioral Styles and Navigating Change

All transformation and redesign initiatives require high performing teams and careful attention to change management to be successful. In this session, we will explore 4 behavioral styles and lead participants through an individual assessment so they can learn more about their own style, and how to gauge and understand the styles of team members. This can be a powerful way to engage a diverse group of people and make sure the group understands the needs, wants and contributions of the individual team members. We will also explore the continuum of the human reaction towards change as people move through denial, resistance, exploration and commitment and how leaders can best support their teams through change.
