Arrhythmias or heart rhythm disorders remain a major clinical and public health issue both in the USA, as well as globally. In particular, the burden of atrial fibrillation continues to grow significantly and sudden cardiac arrest accounts for half of all cardiovascular deaths. In recent years there have been significant developments in diagnostic as well as therapeutic modalities for management of arrhythmias.

The overall goal of this program is to provide clinically relevant, state of the art information to healthcare providers regarding the diagnosis, triage, management and tertiary referral of patients presenting with heart rhythm disorders. Special care has been taken to provide attendees with the opportunity to learn from and interact with individuals who are experts in the field.

Objectives
Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the pathophysiology, diagnosis, signs, and symptoms associated with atrial fibrillation
  2. Determine which patients with atrial fibrillation are appropriate candidates for anticoagulation and select the best anticoagulant for stroke prevention
  3. Recognize when a rate-control strategy should be initiated versus a rhythm-control strategy in patients with AF
  4. Identify the best candidates for atrial fibrillation ablation to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life
  5. Apply clearly defined recommendations to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death
  6. Recognize indications for implantation of a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) in patients with a history of syncope
