AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™

This full-day multidisciplinary symposium on the topic of Intracranial Hypotension secondary to spinal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak brings together top clinicians and researchers to share the latest advancements in diagnostics and treatments of this under-diagnosed, disabling but treatable secondary headache disorder. Clinicians, researchers and patients are invited to attend.

The speakers will include representation from a range of subspecialties, including neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, pain management / anesthesiology, integrative medicine and clinical genetics.

There will be a professional track and a patient/caregiver track. Professional sessions will cover current aspects of clinical findings and diagnosis, etiology, diagnostic imaging, percutaneous interventions and surgical approaches. Sessions for patients and caregivers will provide an overview and update on the current diagnosis and treatment of intracranial hypotension as well as information to empower patients in improving outcomes and quality of life. Challenging cases will be submitted in advance for review and discussion by a team of experts. A panel of clinicians and researchers will have a round-table discussion about priorities for research and developments.

There is an urgent need to improve access to appropriate diagnostics and treatments to reduce the burden of suffering for patients. Join your colleagues in learning about important advancements and share your insights about priorities for the future.

*Submit your challenging case for review – include a brief de-identified patient history and extracted imaging frames to [email protected] .
Imaging on disc will be requested for cases selected for discussion

We encourage participation by all individuals. If you have a disability, advance notification of any special needs will help us better serve you.  Please email us at [email protected] or (310) 423-5548.

Objectives
  1. Recognize the range of clinical manifestations and complications of intracranial hypotension.
  2. Describe the diagnostic criteria for intracranial hypotension.
  3. Summarize the mechanisms of headache and other neurologic signs and symptoms of intracranial hypotension.
  4. Discuss the Heritable Disorders of Connective Tissue that have been associated with spontaneous intracranial hypotension.
  5. Describe the typical findings of intracranial hypotension on cranial MRI.
  6. Discuss current spinal imaging techniques used to localize spinal CSF leaks, recognizing that optimal imaging technique varies with type of leak.
  7. Describe percutaneous treatment approaches including epidural patching with autologous blood, fibrin glue, etc.
  8. Recognize indications for surgery and discuss surgical approaches for spinal CSF leaks.
  9. Recognize and manage rebound intracranial hypotension that may occur post intervention for spinal CSF leaks.
  10. Explain symptoms and the basics of diagnosis and treatment of spinal CSF leaks.
  11. Apply specific strategies to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
  12. Describe sensible physical limitations following treatment.
  13. Identify resources to navigate short-term and long-term disability processes. (
