Date & Location
Saturday, October 13, 2018, 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM, Marina del Rey Marriott, Marina Del Rey, CA

Overview

This full-day multidisciplinary symposium on the topic of Intracranial Hypotension secondary to spinal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak brings together top clinicians and researchers to share the latest advances in the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of this under-diagnosed, disabling but treatable secondary headache disorder. Clinicians, researchers, patients and caregivers are invited to attend. The symposium offers a professional track and a patient/caregiver track and concludes with an interactive shared session.

Target Audience:

This conference is designed to meet the needs of neurologists; neurosurgeons; pain management; anesthesiologists; neuroradiologists; and other clinicians who treat patients with this diagnosis as well as patients and caregivers interested in  gaining more knowledge on this disorder

Objectives for Professionals

1. Describe the diagnostic criteria for spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH)
2. Describe the mechanisms of headache and other symptoms
3. Recognize the range of clinical manifestations and complications of intracranial hypotension
4. Differentiate between SIH and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS)
5. Describe objective measurements used in the diagnostic evaluation of intracranial hypotension
6. Evaluate current imaging techniques used to localize spinal CSF leaks, recognizing that optimal imaging technique varies with type of leak
7. Compare percutaneous treatment approaches of intracranial hypotension
8. Recognize indications for surgery and discuss surgical approaches for spinal CSF leak
9. Recognize and manage rebound intracranial hypertension that may occur post intervention for spinal CSF leak
10. Apply management strategies for persistent posttreatment symptoms

Objectives for Patients & Caregivers

  1. Understand the similarities between postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and SIH
  2. Name two objective measurements in the evaluation of SIH
  3. Describe the basics of diagnostic imaging used in SIH
  4. Describe the basics of treatment approaches in SIH
  5. Apply specific strategies to manage pain and improve quality of life
  6. Recognize symptoms of rebound intracranial hypertension that may occur post intervention for spinal CSF leak
  7. Describe one way that patients can participate in clinical research of intracranial hypotension
