2022-2024 Radiation Safety in Digital Fluoroscopy: From Principle to Image Wisely and Gently

2022-2024 Radiation Safety in Digital Fluoroscopy: From Principle to Image Wisely and Gently Banner

  • Overview
  • Faculty

Date & Location
Thursday, September 1, 2022, 12:00 AM - Saturday, August 31, 2024, 11:59 PM, Online

Target Audience
Specialties - Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Imaging, Medical Physics, Nuclear Medicine, Orthopaedic Surgery, Other, Pain Management, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Pulmonary Medicine, Radiology, Surgery, Urology, Vascular Surgery

Overview
This module provides learners with a review of the technical considerations that should be part of performing any fluoroscopically guided procedure. This online activity meets California educational requirements for physicians who hold radiation Operator & Supervisor Permits, and provides 1 of 4 CME credits in radiation safety for the clinical uses of fluoroscopy that are currently required every two years to retain the Fluoroscopy Operator and Supervisor Permit.

Fluoroscopically guided procedures provide both clinical and economic benefits to patients. This collection of four modules present current information on avoiding radiation-induced tissue reactions, which while uncommon can be catastrophic and continue to occur. By updating clinicians with the most current guidelines and recommendations, including imaging wisely and gently, these injuries should never be a surprise to either operator or patient. Monitoring and controlling radiation dose during the procedure and using dose information for continuous benefit-risk analysis is essential. In instances where injury is unavoidable, its magnitude can be minimized assuming appropriate actions are taken before, during, and after each use.

This CME activity is designed for physicians affiliated with Cedars-Sinai who hold a California radiation supervisor & operator permit.

Objectives
  1. Describe the essential components and safe operation of fluoroscopic equipment
  2. Recognize the proper techniques of safe fluoroscopic equipment use for patients and staff in all clinical scenarios
  3. Apply patient safety recommendations during extended fluoroscopic procedures to avoid potential skin burns
  4. Discuss radiation biology and physics and the implications for the clinical use of fluoroscopy
