Overview
The Serious illness communication skills training is a 2.5 hour facilitated training that teaches healthcare professionals a framework for serious illness conversations. These skills can help clinicians: Improve communication: Learn how to attend to patient and family emotions, and assess patient's understanding of their illness and preferences for information Deliver bad news: Learn how to deliver serious news in an empathetic way Explore goals of care: Learn how to explore patients' goals and values for their care Discuss advance care planning : Learn how to conduct advance care planning (ACP) discussions This training is done in person with a clinician facilitator and actor.

Objectives
  1. Utilize the Conversation Guide to discuss a persons values and preferences as their health worsens (rather than focusing on specific procedures or therapies)
  2. Describe the following high yield communication techniques: responding to emotion, normalizing, and asking permission
  3. Document a serious illness conversation that includes descriptions of medical information shared, a patients values and goals, and summarizes the conversation
  4. Use effective language more confidently when discussing a patient's care goals with the healthcare team.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, Cedars-Sinai is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

AMA Credit Designation Statement
Cedars-Sinai designates this Live Activity for a maximum of 2.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Non-Physician AMA Attendance
Attendance credit will be provided to other healthcare professionals upon the fulfillment of attendance requirements. Participants should ensure in advance that their credentialing or licensing organization accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
