Overview
Simulation Training for Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA®) Cedars-Sinai Medical Simulation Center endorsed by the American Society of Anesthesiologists. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA®) has bestowed Cedars-Sinai Medical Simulation Center with its Simulation Education Network endorsement. With this endorsement, Cedars-Sinai Medical Simulation Center) joins an elite group of more than 47 centers nationwide that currently hold this distinction. Cedars-Sinai Medical Simulation Center is proud of its work to provide high-caliber educational opportunities. ASA’s endorsement will allow the center to provide physician anesthesiologists and their patients with a powerful advantage as simulation education demonstrates a direct upgrade in patient safety and quality of care. Simulation education is an innovative training method where physician anesthesiologists problem-solve issues in a setting that closely replicates actual clinical experience during surgery. Courses are designed to realistically recreate challenging cases, such as insufficient oxygen levels in the blood, difficult airway management, emergency blood pressure issues or cardiac events. These centers also offer courses that provide a safe environment to learn about new techniques or drugs. Simulation education programs offer participants experience in crisis management, patient safety and professional teamwork in a controlled setting that can be difficult to teach in the active operating arena. The approval process for ASA endorsement is extensive. It includes review of the center’s mission, educational offerings, curriculum development, instructor and course effectiveness, program leadership, infrastructure and standing with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). For additional information, please visit http://education.asahq.org/Simulation-Education. Purpose The purpose of this simulated activity is to provide anesthesiologists with case scenarios that may be seen in daily practice. They will complete the simulation and reflect individually and as a group on their performances with guided debriefing. The Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Department of Anesthesiology & Peri-operative Care faculty and staff are dedicated to the ABA MOCA components including adherence to good professional standing, lifelong learning and self-assessment, cognitive examination, and practice performance assessment and improvement.  High-fidelity simulation allows for active learning and cognitive and performance assessment through scenario participation and after action review. Our extensive libraries of common and critical scenarios are derived from actual cases seen in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center operating rooms or from published case reports. Many of the scenarios explore broad differential diagnoses and devolve into an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) based crisis scenario, requiring active and current knowledge of guidelines, effective interdepartmental and interpersonal communication skills, and confidence in a stressful situation. Target Audience Board Certified Anesthesiologists who need to fulfill their Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA®) Part IV requirements or who would like to gain experience in critical cases in a simulated environment.

Objectives

Activity Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  2. Decrease the occurrence of morbidity and mortality through effective timing and utilization of resources in emergency situations.
  3. Provide effective management of hemodynamic and respiratory critical events in anesthesia.
  4. Provide a broader differential diagnosis during debriefing sessions by recognizing and eliminating potential areas of cognitive bias.
  5. Reflect on optimal teamwork, leadership and communication skills require in crisis management.
