Overview

Movement Disorders are a complex and multifaceted group of illnesses affecting the nerve cells in the brain. Symptoms include involuntary movements, muscle rigidity, slowness, changes in speech and gait. Most commonly encountered in the clinical setting is Parkinson's disease (PD). According to the Parkinson?s Foundation, nearly one million people in the US will be living with PD by 2020 and approximately 60,000 Americans will be diagnosed every year. Given that each PD patient is unique, clinicians may not know about all treatment options or know which treatment is best suited for each patient. To help address this need, expert faculty will discuss the challenges and opportunities for clinicians and healthcare professionals managing patients with PD and other movement disorders, including current and emerging medical and surgical advances that can be used to slow disease progression and improve patient quality of life.

Objectives
  1. Summarize the criteria for identifying patients with Parkinson’s disease and apply strategies to detect early symptoms
  2. Define surgical approaches for Parkinson’s disease (PD), essential tremor (ET) and dystonia patients
  3. Recognize the various forms of dystonia, including DYT1, generalized dystonia and focal dystonia, and the options for treatment
  4. Identify the different types of tremor, their diagnostic value and treatment options
  5. Discuss available deep brain stimulation options for patients with movement disorders
