Overview
The 22nd Annual Emergency Medicine Symposium: A Practical Update is a comprehensive one-day course designed to provide emergency medicine professionals with the latest advancements and best practices in critical care and emergency medicine. This symposium covers a wide range of topics crucial for delivering high-quality patient care in the emergency department setting.

Objectives
  1. Analyze the management strategies for atrial fibrillation with varying ventricular rates, including indications for cardioversion and criteria for discharge. Evaluate the risks and benefits of different therapeutic options for patients presenting with atrial fibrillation.
  2. Identify the clinical signs and ultrasound findings indicative of ectopic pregnancy and other abnormal pregnancies in the first trimester. Apply current management guidelines to develop treatment plans for pregnant patients presenting with first-trimester complications.
  3. Assess the unique challenges and management strategies for pediatric trauma cases, including injury patterns and age-specific interventions. Implement a structured approach to the assessment and stabilization of pediatric trauma patients in an emergency setting.
  4. Recognize the spectrum of anaphylaxis presentations, from mild to severe, and apply appropriate interventions for each level of severity. Evaluate and prioritize treatment strategies for managing anaphylaxis, including immediate and advanced life support measures.
  5. Identify best practices for providing sensitive and competent care to transgender patients in the emergency department. Assess the unique medical and psychological needs of transgender patients and develop strategies to address these in emergency situations.
  6. Evaluate emerging trends and technologies in emergency medicine and their potential impact on future practice and patient care. Discuss the challenges and opportunities facing emergency medicine practitioners in 2025, including advances in technology and shifts in healthcare policy.
  7. Develop a systematic approach to the logistical considerations and procedural coordination required for performing high-risk, life-saving interventions. Analyze case studies to identify best practices for managing the complex logistics of heroic procedures in an emergency setting.
  8. Identify recent trends and novel pathogens in emerging and exotic infections, and integrate new diagnostic and treatment approaches into clinical practice. Evaluate the clinical presentation and management strategies for infections that are uncommon or newly recognized in emergency medicine.
  9. Apply the latest evidence-based practices for the assessment and management of critically ill patients in the emergency department. Review and implement updated protocols for managing complex critical care scenarios in the ED.
  10. Explain the indications for and mechanics of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) in emergency medicine and assess patient eligibility. Develop a protocol for integrating ECMO into emergency care, including considerations for patient selection and management.
