Overview
The intent of the Special Pathogens symposium is to provide education regarding hospital preparedness for high-consequence infectious diseases to healthcare professionals in Health and Human Services (HHS) Region IX frontline, assessment and treatment facilities. The purpose of the symposium is to provide education, foster institutional collaboration, and improve relationships with assessment treatment hospitals within the region. Specific objectives include assessing current global events related to low-incidence, high-consequence infectious pathogens; explaining key elements of the regional concept of operations (ConOps); identifying critical issues relevant for hospital preparedness for special pathogens; and collaborating with global partners. The 2025 Symposium will highlight implementation of identify, isolate, and exercise planning for special pathogen preparedness.

Objectives
  1. Analyze critical issues relevant for hospital preparedness of emerging pathogens within HHS Region IX.
  2. Discuss methods to strengthen hospital preparedness capacity for emerging pathogens in Region IX.
  3. Examine relevant lessons learned from patient management of Marburg and Lassa Fever that may be applied within Region IX.
  4. Describe strategies to implement identify, isolate, and inform in hospitals within Region IX.
  5. Collaborate as an interprofessional healthcare team to develop and implement a communication strategy for hospital preparedness against emerging pathogens in HHS Region IX, clearly defining roles and responsibilities to ensure effective teamwork during crisis response.
