This conference will focus on Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) and Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD), rare and poorly understood disorders of the central nervous system that primarily affect the optic nerves and the spinal cord. The exact cause of NMO/NMOSD is unknown and NMO/NMOSD is often misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis (MS). Optic neuritis causes eye pain or impaired/loss of vision in one or both eyes. Transverse myelitis symptoms include neck or back pain, weakness in arms or legs, numbness, painful muscle spasms, loss of sensation, bladder or bowel dysfunction. NMO/NMOSD can also affect brainstem structures leading to intractable vomiting and hiccups. Children may develop seizures or experience confusion. Led by expert faculty, you will learn about this challenging disorder and the importance of a careful diagnosis and early intervention using the latest medical approaches. A unique feature of this program is a concurrent patient education program conducted in collaboration with The Guthy-Jackson Charitable Foundation.

Objectives
  1. Describe the clinical and laboratory features that distinguish neuromyelitis optica and neuromyelitis spectrum disorder from multiple sclerosis
  2. Summarize the diagnostic workup and differential diagnosis for neuromyelitis optica and neuromyelitis spectrum disorder
  3. Counsel patients on the importance of a healthy lifestyle to strengthen immune system, increase mobility, and reduce fatigue and depression
  4. Recommend participation in clinical trials for patients or family members who meet inclusion criteria
  5. Identify which patients would benefit from newer disease-modifying therapies
  6. Prescribe appropriate disease modifying therapies for neuromyelitis and neuromyelitis spectrum disorder
  7. Describe and apply the new diagnostic criteria for neuromyelitis optica and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder

Registration
