Based on the best-selling board review textbook series written by the conference speakers, this interactive didactic experience is developed to meet the educational needs of practicing gastroenterologists and gastroenterology Fellows who wish to test their knowledge of specific GI topics in preparation for earning points toward the American Board of Medicine (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program, or who simply want to improve their knowledge of gastrointestinal diseases and disorders and enhance the quality of their practice. The course will follow the blueprint developed by ABIM. Each content category – esophagus, stomach/duodenum, liver, biliary tract, pancreas, small intestine and colon – will explore anatomy, development, function/physiology; symptoms/clinical presentation; and the diseases and disorders in each. In collaboration with the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), participants will have the option of earning up to 20 MOC points with successful completion of the ACG’s Self-Assessment modules. A distinguishing feature of this conference is the fact that the course content is delivered over the course of only a day and half. The course directors for this conference recognized that long and detailed discussions that are not directly relevant to board and re-certification exams should be eliminated. Conversely, many board review manuals provide lists and bullet points that lack sufficient background and context. To address the needs of busy gastroenterologists, this conference will present high-yield information in the most rational, relevant, and contextually appropriate format.  This is a time-tested approach that had led to wide dissemination and success of the speakers’ own textbook series, which will serve as a blueprint for this new educational offering.
Objectives
  1. Identify risk factors for and apply strategies to prevent gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders
  2. Retain and apply clinical “pearls” to diagnose complex GI disorders and identify and integrate therapeutic options based on pathophysiology, classification, guidelines, and best clinical practice recommendations
  3. Demonstrate competence in certification and recertification exams in gastroenterology as required by the American Board of Internal Medicine
