Overview
We are very excited to invite you to attend, in person, the 2024 Cedars-Sinai Treat Obesity Now: A Workshop to Implement Real World Strategies, on September 20th, 2024. This event is approved for 6 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. This symposium is intended for clinicians, of all disciplines, to learn real world strategies to discussing weight with patients, evidence-based treatments and how to start using these effectively in your practice. Although lifestyle interventions are the foundation of weight management, sustaining weight loss over the long-term is extremely challenging for a multitude of controllable and uncontrollable variables. This educational event will help you feel equipped to treat this complex, chronic medical condition, with an understanding of how to offer and counsel with a variety of tools in your toolbox. Our goal is to have you walk away from this educational event feeling confident and competent in counseling patients on evidence-based treatments for obesity in your practice. We are honored to present numerous distinguished speakers including our keynote speaker, Dr. Ivania Rizo, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of Obesity Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology at the Diabetes, Nutrition and Weight Management at Boston Medical Center. Dr. Rizo has extensive clinical experience as an obesity medicine specialist and endocrinologist. She understands and has worked through the difficulties of navigating the complex system challenges, including coverage and access for obesity care, and she will shed light on how to best pilot through conditions.

Objectives
  1. Understand obesity as a chronic condition and its impact on patient care and the clinician-patient relationship
  2. Explain the pathophysiology of obesity and describe multidisciplinary treatment options (lifestyle, pharmacotherapy, surgery) to reduce delays in care
  3. Develop skills to engage in weight-bias-free conversations with patients
  4. Acquire knowledge of prescribing and titrating GLP1 agents with recommended behavioral counseling to ensure patient adherence, tolerance, safety, and mitigate side effects
  5. Gain understanding of evidence-based nutrition recommendations for effective weight loss and maintenance
  6. Recognize and manage common complications of metabolic and bariatric surgery (i.e. GERD, vitamin deficiencies), particularly importance if considering prescribing a GLP1 agents in these patients
  7. Improve proficiency in interchanging between GLP1 agents, first-generation anti-obesity medications, or off-label options when presented with challenges with coverage and access.
